Description
The Ocean Explorer class is an exciting and age-appropriate 4-5 hour educational session that is open to children from 6 years old upwards. Starting with some fun classroom work all about the oceans and the creatures that live there, we then dive into practical applications that include catching plankton in nets and studying them under a microscope with our marine biologists, taking a boat ride for snorkeling or diving in our local marine protected area to see the creatures they learned about in the morning (diving is 10+ years old and requires a scuba certification), and recording their experience at the end of the day by painting what they have seen onto a signed ceramic tile. The ceramic tiles are then baked and installed on our artificial reefs as a lasting tribute to the oceans. When sea conditions permit, we can also video the children’s experience in the water.
Generally we group children of a similar age in the classes so that everyone gets the maximum learning benefit from the day, although we have had some wonderful family days where parents join the fun too!
The Ocean Explorer course can be delivered in a school trip format and we have extensive experience in organizing large scale events with up to 300 children.
Children need to be swimmers to participate in this course, for non-swimmers we have an alternative option called the Kid’s Ocean Discovery course which focuses on fun land-based activities.
