So what is Project REEFrame and what does the Reef Restoration Team do? Read on to discover the amazing results they are achieving!

The Project REEFrame Goals

Project REEFrame is on a community mission to protect, restore and extend coral reefs in Dibba, Fujairah.

We have a 40,000 m2 site, protected by an environmental permit issued by the Fujairah Environment Authority, and we are busy building a 5,000 m2 coral nursery and a massive 30,000 m2 reef!

Coral reefs are vital to the health of our ocean, but every year we are losing coral coverage on the UAE reefs due to climate change. No coral = no marine life, so we founded Project REEFrame 5 years ago because we need to do something radical before it’s too late.

The Reef Restoration team is at the core of Project REEFrame, a community programme that has three main goals:

      1. To rescue endangered corals on our natural reefs, then nurture them to a healthy size in our coral nursery so that they can be outplanted to create new coral reefs or to repair natural reef damage.
      2. To educate people of all ages about the amazing things the ocean does for us, as well as how we can protect its vital ecosystems.
      3. To create measurable impact using science-based restoration techniques.

Join The Reef Restoration Team!

The Reef Restoration Team brings together ocean enthusiasts of all ages, starting at 10 years old. We train divers and non-divers in different roles, and both are vital to our success.

Diving Activities

As a certified diver, you can help us to:

  • install nursery tables and reef structures underwater;
  • rescue naturally broken corals, then plant them in our nursery;
  • nurture the corals and do the “gardening work” to remove algae, sponge and predators over 9 months to a year; and
  • outplant them onto the reefs in their new permanent home when they are big enough.

Non-Diving Activities

Each month we take photographic measures of the corals to document and support our science- based objectives.

These photos are processed using the ImageJ Fiji software and non-divers can learn to analyse the photos to determine size, growth, predation, disease, and mortality. These measures are uploaded into a database for research and reporting purposes.
